We chose the criteria. Here is how we compare
Twelve things we believe decide whether you end up speaking a language, and where each app stands — including where the others win.

How to read this
The twelve criteria are ours: we chose what we think decides whether you end up actually speaking, so judge the criteria before you judge the table. A check means every subscriber gets it, a cross means we found no such feature published by that company, and a dot means something like it exists in a weaker form — hover over a dot to read exactly what.
Prices are deliberately kept out of the chart: Natural Fluency is $18.90 a month; the others range from about $10 to $30 a month, checked, like everything else here, in September 2026.
The twelve criteria
- Unlimited spoken conversation. Fluency is built in hours of talking.
- Corrections while you speak. Feedback after the call arrives too late.
- Corrections that become your lesson and games. Review your errors, not a generic list.
- Teachers who remember you. A teacher who knows you teaches a different class.
- Teacher, accent, mood, speed and corrections, all yours to set.
- A 23-year classroom method behind the app. A school, not only software.
- Adventures you co-write into a book. Practice you keep, with images and audio.
- Communities with leaderboards and challenges. Studying next to other people.
- You vote on what gets built next. Users decide, and watch it arrive.
- One teacher, two forms. Your human teacher is also your in-app teacher.
- The same depth in all 13 languages. The thirteenth as complete as the first.
- Web, iOS and Android, with hands-free. A class with your hands full.
Where the others are better
Duolingo is better at getting you back tomorrow: the streak, the leagues and a real free tier build a daily habit better than we do.
Babbel is better at a structured grammar course: short lessons in a clear sequence, with the grammar explained before you are asked to use it.
ChatGPT is better at everything that is not a language course: one subscription translates, explains, drafts and answers in any language you switch to.
The only honest test is a conversation
Tables compare features. Fluency is decided by how much you speak, and by whether you want to come back the next day. Take a free class and judge for yourself — no card needed.
